19th century Portuguese Palissy ware snake handled urn with shredded clay moss covered body applied with lizards, toads and butterflies. Marked base with impressed M Mafra. Notes: Manuel Mafra Manuel Cipriano Gomes Mafra is credited with starting the Portuguese Palissy ware revival in the late 1850’s and was the dominant Caldas Da Rainha ceramist for 30 years and the first to establish an international market for Portuguese Palissy ware. After Mafra’s works were commissioned by the king Don Fernando Ii the crown was authorized as part of his mark. Price:
