18th century English Delft plate, 9" in diameter. A man and a woman sit at a table in a Chinese garden, playing a game (the man holds a tossing cup and there are two groups of gaming pieces on the table). The central scene is contained in an octagonal reserve against the powder-blue ground. There are eight shaped reserves on the rim, four containing flying birds and four with artemisia leaves (both motifs are commonly found as marks on the bottom of 18th c. Chinese blue and white porcelain). Three sprigs decorate the back of the rim. The design of this plate is quite scarce. Price:
